The Creation Myth unit most greatly deepened my understanding of cultural point of view. Rather than simply analyzing the devices of a myth or story, for this unit I learned to question the reasons behind a particular theme or message. Consequently, this new questioning also strengthened my inference skills The original creators of the myths studied did not leave any commentary behind their choice of themes. I learned to reverse engineer the components of a story to make inferences about the authors. My understanding of symbolism remained relatively strong and I was able to apply skills learned from the previous Life of Pi unit. My paragraph development skills greatly improved in this unit. I learned to remove the extra, unnecessary information which tarnished my animal symbolism paragraphs, thereby making my creation myth essay much more concise. However, I still tended to redundantly restate ideas beyond what was necessary for emphasis. My topic sentences, quote integration, and MLA skills remained solid. I am most proud of my conclusion paragraph of the creation myth essay- this is my first strong conclusion; it contains some original ideas and personal responses to the analysis contained in the essay body. Previously, my conclusions were mere restatements or summaries of the analysis. My conclusions, however, could always use improvement; the original ideas in my creation myth were somewhat rudimentary. I plan to improve on my ability to critique and develop original ideas inspired by works of literature.
